Chateau Gaillard, Les Andelys, France

En route from Normandy to Paris, I was able to visit this stronghold of Richard the Lionheart overlooking the Seine.

I spent a wonderful day exploring this castle, whose origins go back to the 10th century. Because I visited in March, I was able to take this picture through the trees on the climb up from the village.

Neemrana Castle, Rajastan

Neemrana, India is a town roughly halfway between Delhi and Jaipur. The reason to stop there is to visit the five-hundred-year-old Neemrana Castle / Palace / Fort, which is now a hotel with seventy-two rooms, enjoy their excellent lunch buffet in an opulent dining room and stay for the night. Renovated in 1986, the fanciful structure is right out of a Harry Potter novel with twelve levels, towers, turrets, parapets, arches, waterfalls, winding stairs and hanging gardens. Photo taken November 2017.

St. Michael's Mount-Marazion, Cornwall, England

Amazed to discover while visiting Cornwall, an English version of Mont St. Michel, France. This 14th Century castle/fortress/chapel was definitely inspired by the French original.

Heidelberg Castle

Exquisite Renaissance Castle of the Northern Alps. Although Neuschwanstein is probably Germany’s best-known and most striking castle, the Heidelberger Schloss has more than 500 years of history behind it. As impressive as it is close up and inside, it is perhaps more so from a high vantage point on a lovely hiking trail.

San Marino Guaita Tower

San Marino may be a micro state, but it probably boasts more castle per square meter than any other country. Its three castles, including Guiana, are proudly depicted on the country’s national flag and coat of arms. Guaita is the oldest (11th c.) and most famous. Hard to imagine any army successfully capturing it.

Known for the "fairy chimneys," Cappadocia has these tall cone-shaped rock formations everywhere. Grab a balloon ride and see the magic from the air. They sure look like nature's castle, right?

Roman Pool, Hearst Castle, San Simeon, California

Built for magazine magnate William Randolph Hearst in the early 20th century, the castle was once famous as a social center for hosting rich, powerful, and famous personalities from movie stars to politicians. Its Roman Pool at Hearst Castle is a tiled indoor pool decorated with eight statues of Roman gods, goddesses and heroes. Photo taken September 2019.

Dracula's Castle (Bran, Romania)

One of several castles that Dracula (a.k.a. Vlad the Impaler) may have called home, this one in Bran, Romania was chosen by the government to be called the “real” Dracula’s Castle. The 14th century structure houses a museum and is a must-see stop for those visiting Transylvania.

Bran Castle

Bran Castle is a national monument and landmark in Transylvania. It is located about 15 miles from Brasov in Romania. Dating from the 13th century, the castle is mistakenly linked by many to the Dracula book. Author Bram Stoker had never known specifically about the Bran Castle, however, when writing his fiction book.

We had a 24 hour layover in Frankfurt, Germany on the way back from Africa, so we visited the 850 year old Eltz Castle. It felt like walking straight into a Disney fairy tale. This castle is travel writer Rick Steves' favorite in all of Europe.

Grace O'Malley's Castle (Ireland)

Grace O’Malley’s Castle on Ireland’s Achill Island is one of several castles associated with the infamous pirate queen. Also called Carrickkildavnet Castle or Kildavnet Castle, the tower house dates to the early 15th century. Today, the imposing structure overlooks a serene setting on the island’s southeast coast.

Le Mont Saint-Michel in France

The castle that inspired the Kingdom of Corona in Disney's 'Tangled', where Rapunzel was stolen from her parents. Wow! Morning sunrise walk into one of the most magical sights we've ever seen. It was a long journey to get here, but we're so happy we made it. After leaving Spain, we flew to Paris and drove 4 hours to the small village nearby. No cars are allowed access into Le Mont Saint-Michel, so we got up early and walked 2km across the pedestrian bridge. It was like a real-life fairytale. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mont Saint-Michel only has a population of 44. It was built during ancient times and remained unconquered during the Hundred Years' War. Today, more than 3 million tourists visit annually.

Trakai Castle - Lithuania’s Best

Rowing Past History. That's what I thought as I watched a man in a little skiff plying the smooth water surrounding the wonderfully romantic, 700-year-old+ Trakai Castle. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania was fortunate indeed to have this truly grand castle as one of its main centres.

Few places on Earth look more like storybook illustrations than Neuschwanstein Castle, located in the Bavarian Alps of Germany. With its towers, turrets, frescoes, and throne hall, Neuschwanstein looks like it was plucked straight from a fairy tale. In fact, it was this castle that inspired Disney’s Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.
