Bandaneira Airport

On a two-month trip around the Indonesian archipelago with my wife and our two daughters, we travelled almost exclusively by ferry. But one flight took us from Bandaneira to Ambon. The eternal wait for the delayed plane in the open-air passenger lounge was way more pleasant than any first class lounge.

Sometimes you have to wait for a plane to take off in order to walk the airport tarmac into Gibraltar from Spain.

1992 German Embassy Moscow

As soon as I could after the fall of the Soviet Union I spent some time with my friend Igor there, whom I did not yet know in person. He wanted a visa for Germany - almost impossible to get. Three days of waiting at the embassy; you could hire people to do that for you. But we went there together, and waving my German passport we were in the embassy in a whiff and Igor had his visa within two days.

The New Zealand pampas grasses flow in the wind while we wait for that same wind to blow the cloud cover off of Mount Taupo. That never happened.

Waiting for a Bite (PNG)

We left Karawari Lodge (a former Spirit House deep in the jungle highlands of Papua New Guinea, on the Karawari River) and boarded a 4-person motorized craft bound for a morning visit to a small village upstream. Like many people who live along the river, these villagers eat pudding or pancakes made from Sago palms, occasional leaves from other flora, and fish. Fishing is often done by women, in dugout canoes. This village woman had her fishing line in the water and was waiting for a nibble -- and for us to leave her to her work.

Digesting

Waiting for lunch to digest . . . My guide told me this Komodo dragon was a male and that, because he had just eaten, it was likely that I could safely approach a bit closer. He was resting and digesting.

Awaiting Sunrise (Morocco)

We trekked up the glorious sand dunes near Erfoud, Morocco, and stayed at a classic Berber tented camp. In the middle of the night we crept outside our shelter to lie in the powdery sand, gaze at the infinity of stars, and listen only to sound of the soft wind in our ears. Early the next morning we sat on a tall dune to await the sunrise. Our guide, who had seen this view countless times, was still mesmerized by its beauty.

Awaiting Alms

These young nuns, dressed in their crisp, colorful habits, were making their daily rounds to receive alms in a village near Inle Lake, Myanmar. I saw them waiting for a shopkeeper to bring out little packets of food for them. While most of the nuns in this grouop were pre-teens or teenagers, the youngest looked to be no more than about nine years old -- too young to be able to balance a tray on her head. While waiting, however, she was busy checking to make sure her robes were in order.

All yield to the giant trevally

We can clearly see that the giant trevally is at the top of the food chain as hundreds of barracuda and a few lone divers trail behind. Taken at Barracuda Point dive site on Sipadan, Malaysia, this is a must visit destination!

Tim waiting on hold

That first class seat was nice from Buenos Aires to Miami until we were unable to get a flight on standby out of Miami. Tim is on hold with United trying to book a standby ticket on Air Canada back to Toronto in 1999. We had a cell phone for the next trip.
