We run a monthly photo contest for members of our Camera Club. Pollunit had been displaying contestants submitted photos on all devices, computer, tablets and phones without problem for over a year. However starting wih our June 24 contest any members who tried to view submitted photos on any Apple device using Safari found that a black box was displayed. One member showed me this problem on an Apple Mac laptop. But when she accessed Pollunit on that same Mac laptop using the Firefox browser she was able to view the contest photos on Pollunit. I cannot expect Apple users to download and install Firefox on their Apple devices. In addition I found that other photo apps such as Google photos displayed their photos on Macs and iPads without difficulty. Please advise.
I have tested various versions of Safari, including those on iPad and iPhone, and I can see all the images.
Could you please send the link to your contest to support@pollunit.com so we can investigate further? Additionally, provide information about the Safari version you are using and your approximate location when accessing PollUnit. Are all the visitors to your PollUnit on the same network?
Hi, thanks for your prompt response. I've now tested this on another iPad and on an iPhone. In both cases Safari correctly displayed photos in Pollunit. So it would appear that the problem lies with the older versions of Safari. The software version of the iPad Air that failed to display photos is 12.5.7. This iPad will not update to more recent OS versions and so Safari updates are unavailable.
We use modern image formats to enhance image quality while reducing file storage and loading times. Given that the issue concerns a browser version that's 5 years outdated, I'm not convinced we should compromise quality and speed for the majority of our users just to accommodate this. Additionally, generating both old and modern image formats would significantly increase the storage requirements for our customers.
Have you tried to install an other browser using the App Store?
Yes, one Apple Mac user installed Firefox and found that photos were displayed fully on Pollunit.
